When it came to upgrading its collagenase filtration system, Nordmark was looking not only for technical expertise but also for a strategic partner – and found it in the Syntegon subsidiary Pharmatec. Together, the project teams created a highly automated system that modernizes proven processes using state-of-the-art technology and is designed to accommodate future adjustments.

The existing production equipment for collagenase filtration and concentration was past its prime, particularly in terms of availability and reliability of production supply. This made it complicated and costly to comply with current hygiene and safety standards. Automation of production processes was also only possible to a very limited extent. The established process needed to be maintained – quite a challenge, as there was hardly any documentation available.

Specifically developed and safely integrated

The new system processes the fermentatively obtained collagenase in two tanks using a filtration step. Its design and functionality were tailored precisely to Nordmark’s requirements and offer numerous automation options. Thanks to its good accessibility, maintenance can be carried out quickly and with minimal tools. An integrated CIP concept enables repeatable cleaning processes, and the connected measurement technology provides transparency regarding process and system data.

The new filtration system has brought Nordmark multiple benefits:

  • Improved equipment availability and optimized operability thanks to standardized measurement technology
  • Automated cleaning processes for consistently high hygiene standards
  • Reduced maintenance through tool-free access to all components
  • Connection to the new process control system for better monitoring and evaluation

A forward-looking partnership

The implementation required a tailor-made solution: The entire system was realized as an engineering-to-order project – adapted to the structural conditions and the available space. Global supply shortages also led to short-term challenges, but the project team responded flexibly and made sure that no major delays occurred. After commissioning, qualification proceeded faster than planned – a rare achievement for systems of this complexity. With the new system, Nordmark now benefits from a cutting-edge solution that will also make future process adjustments easier.

One key factor for the project’s success was the close cooperation in all phases, from the initial requirements specification to qualification. “Pharmatec supported us early on with its experience and understanding of the system, paving the way for a future-proof solution,” says Steffen Lehmann, Team Leader Engineering API Production at Nordmark. This project is a prime example of how collaborative engineering lays the foundation for long-term operational reliability.
