With many decades of experience and numerous inspection machines in the market, Syntegon has taken its portfolio the next step further. Mechanical design engineer Sebastian Fischer explains why cocreation matters and how it will benefit customers.

Key takeaways

  • Developing AIM9: a future-ready solution built on many decades of expertise
  • Modular and flexible platform tailored to diverse customer and product requirements
  • High visual inspection speeds and smooth transport combined with integrated CCIT
  • Seamless integration and easier handling thanks to standardized Syntegon design
Sebastian Fischer

Sebastian, what was your role in developing the new AIM9?

I am the lead mechanical design engineer for this project, so my focus was on designing the new AIM9 – not only in terms of its look and feel on the shopfloor but above all how it answers the requirements of our customers from different angles like speed, cost, and flexibility. Especially CDMOs need one platform that can handle different products with differing characteristics and various vial sizes. Hence, the new AIM9 features a standardized platform with a highly modular design and can be adapted to specific inspection and output requirements together with our customers.

Which challenges did you face?

Apart from the many mechanical challenges typical for every new machine project, the required flexibility definitely stands out. We kind of combined the best from both worlds: our successful AIM platform with smooth transport system and proven particle and cosmetic defect detection forms the basis. We increased the speed to 600 vials per minute and container sizes to 250 milliliters. What’s more, we fully integrated CCIT technologies like headspace analysis and high-voltage leak detection. In the end, we adapted the entire design of the AIM9, integrating it perfectly into Syntegon’s seamless line solutions.

What were your highlights in this project?

We not only work closely with our customers and partners but also cocreate across our different sites to incorporate as much expertise as possible into every design. Having worked in Crailsheim, Germany, before coming to Japan three years ago, I had the opportunity of being involved in the development of the successful ALF 5000 filling and closing machine. During the AIM9 design, I worked closely with colleagues from both fill-finish and inspection. We needed precise coordination between vision specialists and mechanical engineers. The result is a machine that not only fits perfectly with the Syntegon design; it is also easier to operate for customers who have prior experience with Syntegon machines.

How do your customers benefit from this new development?

As just mentioned, our customers will certainly benefit from easier operation, for example through a similar size change part design, as used in other Syntegon equipment. Moreover, AIM9 integrates seamlessly into complete line concepts, both mechanically and visually. Of course, the enhanced speed and integrated CCIT technologies are also decisive benefits. But most importantly, I am convinced that our strong installed base of inspection machines combined with many decades of experience, our seamless line competence, and a dedicated customer perspective make the true difference.

Benefits of AIM9 at a glance

  • High speed: up to 600 containers per minute
  • Integrated CCIT: complete built-in leak detection
  • Safe transport: proven systems for secure handling
  • Flexibility: vial sizes up to 250 ml, easy changeovers
  • Modularity: configurable from 1 to 3 inspection turrets
  • Product variety: liquids and lyophilized products on one platform

What is your outlook for the next years?

Right now, I am very happy to launch our new AIM9 and to experience our customers’ feedback. In parallel, we are of course constantly developing our inspection systems further. This includes enhancing the integration of Artificial Intelligence in our systems, updating our software, for example regarding full compliance with the EU Cybersecurity Act, and upgrading our camera inspection systems. This way, we are continuously making sure that all our inspection platforms are not only state-of-the-art but enable our customers to be future-ready, whenever needed.
