Sustainable packaging for coffee

How about coffee packaging without aluminum?

Bosch Packaging Technology and packaging material supplier O. Kleiner AG invited producers of high-quality and sensitive food products on October 29 to a one-day event, where it was all about sustainable packaging for coffee, in particular without the use of aluminum.

For producers of sensitive food products, which react to light and oxygen such as coffee, baby food or organic food product protection is key. Using an aluminum composite is state of the art in order to protect the product and prevent any change of taste or aroma after packaging.

Replacing a packaging standard

Today, everybody is talking about sustainability so using aluminum in packaging is difficult to justify. Food and packaging producers are challenged to find new solutions, especially where high-barrier requirements from achieving product protection clash with ambitioned sustainable targets.

So what can we do? We took a deeper look into this topic at the conference center at Zurich main station in Switzerland.

Opening the event, Dr. Martin Schlummer from Frauenhofer Institut IVV Freising provided insights into the new packaging regulations to answer the question what the consequences are for the industry.

Dr. Sven Wenigmann, Senior Manager Marketing und New Business Development Extrusion Polyamides bei BASF was talking about the approach of chemical recycling of multi-component barrier film.

Dierk Wiemann from O. Kleiner AG talked about sustainable packaging material and Martin Kleiner, CEO of O. Kleiner AG, presented the packaging relaunch of a Scandinavian customer, who chose to use aluminium-free packaging – a solution that was realized by Bosch Packagaging Technology and O. Kleiner. Using bio-based plastic from renewable sugar cane provides the same performance criteria compared to conventional material while providing good machine operation at the same time.

Closing the event, Torsten Sauer, sustainability expert at Bosch Packaging Technology talked about how you can change your production from conventional to sustainable packaging and its requirements and possibilities with Bosch machines.

Sustainability is our mission

„Our mission is to replace aluminum and, together with our partners and customers, bring solutions to store shelfs”. Says Torsten Sauer. “We are working intensively on developing sustainable packaging and already over a number of solutions.”
