As part of the EIT Food network, Syntegon has developed paper-based trays for sensitive food products. EIT Food is supported by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), a body of the European Union.
In this context, Syntegon is implementing the EIT project “PACK4SENSE” (Paper packaging for SENSitive foods) to develop a sustainable packaging concept together with partners from industry and research.
Optimal recyclability thanks to paper and mono-material
“With the paper-based trays from the “PACK4SENSE” project, we have further developed our previous paper packaging solutions,” explains Matthias Klauser, project manager and sustainability expert at Syntegon. The aim is to pack even sensitive products with high barrier requirements in more sustainable materials. Syntegon uses a paper that is particularly stretchable and tearproof thanks to long cellulose fibers, thus enabling the production of sealed trays and cups with a depth of up to 30 millimeters.
The recyclable barrier layer ensures optimum product protection and consists of 95 percent mono-materials. Crucially, the paper, barrier layer and cover film can be easily separated from each other ¬– this increases recyclability and reduces the plastic content of the packaging. However, this advantage in terms of sustainability poses challenges for packaging manufacturers, as the paper and film must not be detached from each other unintentionally. To prevent this from happening, the TPU paper forming, filling and sealing machine forms paper and barrier layer in a combined process by thermoforming and pressing.
TPU brings paper and barrier layer together
For the PACK4SENSE trays and cups, the paper runs directly from the roll into the feeder – the barrier layer is applied and joined to the paper without any further conversion step. A forming station presses the materials into shape before the trays are filled and sealed.

Our experts are continuously working on further developing the paper-forming technology. EIT Food enables close collaborations with important partners. This allows the development of prototypes and solutions that optimize the sustainability of packaging. “Many challenges still need to be overcome. But we are working hard every day to make our vision a reality,” says Klauser.
